We are the longest-standing family-owned and operated funeral home in Palmerston North.
We value the family connections we have built over this time.
Now in its third generation, Hayden Cotton and Ross Carey are both extensively trained funeral directors and skilled embalmers, each possessing over three decades of experience.

We believe that providing upfront and transparent pricing throughout the funeral process honours the grieving family's right to straightforward information during a challenging time.
During the funeral planning phase, we prioritize discussing budgets and anticipated estimates. Our policy involves securing a minimum deposit of $2,000 for immediate expenses.
We also respect that funeral expenses can sometimes be unforeseen. If this is the case, then there may be assistance available through the Work and Income Funeral Grant or the ACC Funeral Grant, we have application forms on-hand and we can assist with funeral documents needed.
The Work and Income funeral grant has a maximum limit of $2,616.12 .
If a loved one passes away due to an injury covered by ACC, you might be eligible for financial assistance. ACC can contribute towards funeral or memorial expenses of up to $7,793.13.

A Legacy of Trust since 1967.
Robert J. Cotton Funeral Directors has been a trusted pillar of the Palmerston North community since opening its doors in 1967.
Many people ask about our connection to William Cotton & Sons in Feilding—William was the father of Robert James Cotton. Robert established his own funeral home here in Palmerston North, originally named Robert J. Cotton & Sons. Sadly, he passed away just five years later, in 1972.
His eldest son, Trevor, stepped in to continue the legacy, leading the business with integrity and dedication until his retirement in 2020.
Now in its third generation of family ownership, the funeral home is led by Trevor’s son Hayden, technically a fourth-generation funeral director, which is a rarity these days. With nearly 30 years of experience, Hayden, alongside his wife Kylie and their dedicated team, continues to guide the business with compassion, professionalism, and a deep commitment to the families they serve, just as Robert envisioned.
The first premises was on Tremaine Avenue until 1984.
Robert James Cotton “Bob”, the eldest of 11 who migrated to New Zealand from Ireland.

Hayden showed genuine respect for our cultural traditions and went above and beyond to honour every request with care and humility. We’ll never forget the kindness shown to our family—thank you, Hayden and team.”
